Echocardiography
Echocardiography is performed using a specialised ultrasound probe and machine. The examination allows assessment of the heart’s anatomy, valve function, and blood flow, helping to diagnose conditions and guide treatment planning and monitoring.

How to prepare for your appointment
- You may take your usual medications unless your doctor has advised otherwise.
- Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the chest area.
- Remove necklaces and other jewellery that may interfere with the examination.
- Think through any questions you may have and raise them with your doctor before the procedure.
What to expect during your appointment
Reception
You will be welcomed and the procedure will be explained to you.
Position
You will lie on the examination table on your left side.
Examination
The ultrasound probe is moved across your chest to obtain images of the heart. A special gel is applied to both the probe and the skin to improve the transmission of ultrasound waves. You may hear the sounds of your heartbeat and blood flow.
Breathing
You may occasionally be asked to hold your breath or adjust your breathing pattern to help obtain clearer images.
End of procedure
After the examination, you will be given a tissue to wipe the gel from your chest. The entire procedure typically takes 20–40 minutes.
Results
We will analyse the images and measurements obtained and, by prior arrangement, provide you with initial results either immediately or at a later time.
