What does the recreational athlete’s package include?

Laboratory Analyses
  • Complete blood count with a five-part white blood cell differential: Gives a general overview of the body’s current state, shows the status of the immune system, oxygen transport capacity, and the body’s fluid balance.
  • Cholesterol: Helps to assess the risk of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases.
  • HDL cholesterol: Important for assessing cardiovascular risk.
  • Glucose (blood sugar): The body’s primary and main source of energy and an important regulator of metabolism. High values may indicate diabetes; low values may occur if the amount of carbohydrates from food is not sufficient for physical exertion.
  • Calcium (Ca): One of the most important minerals in the body. A value above the norm indicates the release of calcium from the bones; a value below the norm may indicate a vitamin D deficiency. Low calcium levels in the blood can cause muscle cramps.
  • Magnesium (Mg): Participates in carbohydrate metabolism, protein synthesis, and muscle and nerve function. Magnesium deficiency causes muscle weakness and a tendency for cramps.
  • Urea: The end product of protein breakdown, which reflects the volume of protein breakdown in the body. May indicate training that has severely damaged the muscles or impaired kidney function.
  • Creatinine: The end product of muscle metabolism, the amount of which depends on muscle mass. Helps to assess the efficiency of the kidneys.
  • Vitamin D: The effects of vitamin D on bone and muscle health are better known, but studies have found that it is an important health factor, and a good (recommended) level in the blood can also reduce other health risks (e.g., the development and complications of infections, diabetes, high blood pressure, autoimmune diseases, etc.).
  • Alanine aminotransferase (ALT): Primarily a reflector of liver cell damage. May also indicate skeletal muscle diseases and can remain above the norm after trauma and heavy physical exertion.
  • Aspartate aminotransferase (AST): An indicator of muscle tissue damage. A moderate increase in the level may mean skeletal muscle disease, can also occur after trauma and with very heavy physical exertion. The level in the blood also increases in case of liver damage.
  • Ferritin: Shows the body’s iron stores. Low values indicate iron deficiency; high values indicate excess iron. An inflammatory process can interfere with the detection of iron deficiency.
  • High-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP): A sensitive marker for inflammation and the risk of cardiovascular disease. When assessing the risk of heart disease, the simultaneous presence of inflammatory diseases must be ruled out.
  • Creatine kinase: An intracellular enzyme found in all muscles. Used to monitor physical exertion and recovery after training. Increased values may be due to heavy muscle load or trauma.
  • Urine strip analysis: Shows the kidneys’ cleaning ability in removing metabolic waste products.

A health assessment can help evaluate your overall health status and risk factors. If you experience new, persistent or worsening symptoms, it is always recommended to consult a doctor.

  • Decreased athletic performance

    Training results worsen or development stops. This may be related to recovery, energy availability, or iron stores.
  • Frequent illnesses or general weakness

    These may indicate a need for a broader assessment of health status and suitability of exertion.
  • Muscle and joint pain

    Muscle or joint discomfort, cramps, pain, or stiffness in the body, which can occur in various conditions.
  • Reduced exercise tolerance or recovery ability

    Greater fatigue, weakness, or slower recovery than usual after physical exertion, which may be accompanied by shortness of breath or chest discomfort.

How to prepare for your appointment

  • Bring your ID card or another form of identification.
  • Preparation for tests: It is recommended to drink plenty of fluids during the 24 hours before, but do not eat or drink (except water) for 10-12 hours before the blood tests. Avoid coffee, energy drinks, and smoking on the day of the examination.
  • Medications: Inform the doctor of all medications you are taking. Some medications may need to be temporarily stopped before the examination.
  • Clothing: Wear comfortable sports clothes and shoes suitable for physical exercise.
  • Questions: Think about any questions you may have about the examination and ask the doctor before the procedure.

What to expect during your appointment

Registration

Upon arrival, register at the reception and present your identification document.

Blood samples and tests

A nurse will take a blood sample from a vein and measure your blood pressure, weight, and height.

Laboratory analyses

A complete blood count, cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, glucose, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), C-reactive protein (CRP), creatinine, calcium, magnesium, urea, ferritin, creatine kinase, vitamin D, and a urine strip analysis will be performed.

Clinical examinations

A stress ECG is performed, either on a bicycle ergometer or a treadmill.

Specialist assessments

The musculoskeletal condition is assessed at a physiotherapist’s appointment.

Interpreting results

At the doctor’s summary appointment, the results of the analyses and examinations will be commented on, and recommendations for further steps will be given.
