Video laryngoscopy

Video laryngoscopy is a modern method for detailed examination of the nasopharynx, larynx, and vocal cords. It allows the specialist to view laryngeal structures magnified and record images. The examination is important for accurate diagnosis of voice disorders, swallowing difficulties, and other laryngeal problems, ensuring the best treatment outcome.

When to see a specialist

  • Hoarseness or loss of voice 
  • Chronic cough or sore throat 
  • Difficulty swallowing or a feeling of something in the throat 
  • Difficulty breathing 
  • Pain in the laryngeal area

How to prepare for your appointment

  • Bring your ID card or other identification document. 
  • Think through your symptoms, their onset, and duration. 
  • Inform the doctor about all chronic diseases and medications you are taking. 
  • If you are allergic to any medication (especially local anesthetics), be sure to inform the doctor.

What to expect during your appointment

Discussion

The doctor will ask you about your symptoms, medical history, and expectations.

Laryngeal preparation

If necessary, the larynx will be numbed with a local anesthetic spray to reduce discomfort and gag reflex. 

Examination

The doctor inserts a flexible endoscope through the nose into the laryngeal area. A camera attached to the endoscope transmits the image to a screen, which the doctor observes and records if necessary. You may be asked to make a sound or swallow.

Analysis and explanation of results

The doctor will analyze the image obtained during the examination and explain the condition of your larynx, findings, and possible diagnoses.

Counseling and recommendations

Recommendations will be given for further treatment, which may include medications, voice therapy, lifestyle changes, or, if necessary, further examinations/procedures/operations.

Is video laryngoscopy painful?

The procedure can be slightly uncomfortable, but it is usually not painful.

How long does the examination take?

The examination itself usually lasts only a few minutes, but with preparation and explanation of results, the visit can take 15-20 minutes.

Can I eat and drink immediately after the examination?

If a local anesthetic was used, it is recommended to wait about 30-60 minutes before eating and drinking to avoid food entering the airways.

Can I see the image during the examination?

It is not possible to see the image during the examination itself, but the doctor can record the result and show it to you later if necessary. 

What if I have a strong gag reflex? 

Be sure to inform the doctor before the procedure. With a local anesthetic and proper breathing technique, it is possible to control the gag reflex.
