X-ray Examinations

An X-ray is a widely used diagnostic imaging study that helps assess fractures, joint changes, and certain findings in the chest or dental area. We offer 2D X-ray examinations and, when necessary for dentistry and the maxillofacial (jaw and face) area, 3D scans.

An X-ray can help assess the following conditions and complaints:

  • Fractures and trauma: X-rays help determine the presence and extent of fractures, dislocations, and other changes following an injury.
  • Joint problems: The scan can help assess findings that suggest degenerative disease (wear and tear), inflammation, or other changes in the musculoskeletal system.
  • Chest complaints: A chest X-ray is used to assess certain changes in the lungs and chest area, for example, if pneumonia is suspected.
  • Teeth and jaws: 2D and 3D dental X-rays help assess changes related to teeth, tooth roots, jaws, and bite, and support treatment planning.
  • Suspected foreign body: An X-ray can help identify some foreign bodies that have entered the body.
  • Other changes in the skeleton or chest area: The scan can help clarify findings that require further assessment or treatment planning.

Common symptoms

Consult a doctor, who can refer you for an X-ray examination if needed, if you experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Abdominal pain or discomfort

If abdominal pain or discomfort persists, recurs, or worsens over time.
  • Bone pain

Especially after trauma or prolonged persistent pain.
  • Cough

If the cough is persistent or worsens, dry and irritating, or accompanied by phlegm.
  • Difficulty breathing

Difficulty breathing may occur, especially in risk groups.

How to prepare for your appointment

  • Bring your ID card or another form of identification.
  • Remove jewellery and other metal objects from the area being examined, as they can interfere with the image.
  • Wear comfortable clothing; you may be asked to change into a gown for the examination.
  • Be sure to inform the staff if you are or might be pregnant. The need for the scan and possible alternatives will then be assessed.
  • Fasting is not usually necessary unless you have been given specific instructions.

What to expect during your appointment

Document check

We will check your identification document.

Preparation

The staff will explain the procedure and may ask you to remove metal objects or change your clothes.

Positioning

You will be placed in a suitable position for the scan—standing, sitting, or lying down.

Imaging

One or more X-ray images will be taken. It is important to remain still during the imaging and sometimes to hold your breath for a moment.

2D or 3D scan

A standard X-ray provides a two-dimensional image. A 3D scan is used primarily for a more detailed assessment in dentistry and the maxillofacial area.

Evaluation of results

A radiologist, dentist, or your referring doctor will evaluate the images. The results will be sent to the doctor who referred you or used to create a treatment plan. The results of the scan can also be found on the national Health Portal.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an X-ray?

An X-ray is an imaging study that uses ionising radiation to create images of the internal structures of the body. It is often used to evaluate bones, joints, and the chest area.

What is the difference between a 2D and a 3D X-ray?

A 2D X-ray provides a two-dimensional image. A 3D X-ray, such as a CBCT scan, is used mainly for a more detailed assessment in dentistry and the maxillofacial area.

Is an X-ray painful?

No, the scan itself is painless. The only discomfort may come from holding the required position, especially if the area being examined is painful.

Is an X-ray safe?

An X-ray involves a small dose of radiation. If the scan is medically necessary, its benefits usually outweigh the small potential risk.

Do I need a referral for an X-ray?

es, because the examination is performed based on a medical indication.

Can I have an X-ray during pregnancy?

If necessary, yes, but you must always inform the staff beforehand. The benefits and potential risks will be carefully weighed, and other imaging methods may be preferred if possible.
