In collaboration with Antegenes, Meliva offers a personalized cancer prevention service that assesses the genetic risk for breast cancer, prostate cancer, colorectal cancer, and skin melanoma based on a polygenic risk score. Based on the result, you will receive personal recommendations for prevention and for planning early detection.

Who should consider genetic cancer risk assessment?

Situations where assessing a polygenic risk score may be helpful:

  • You want to assess your personal genetic risk for cancer.
  • You want to know if you might need earlier or more frequent monitoring compared to someone with average risk.
  • You are interested in when and how you should start with screening or monitoring for a specific cancer.
  • You want to receive personal recommendations for reducing your cancer risk and supporting early detection.
  • You want to better understand which changes or warning signs to pay attention to.
  • You have a family history of cancer but want to assess your polygenic risk in addition to the usual understanding of heredity.
  • You want to make more informed choices about your health behaviour and prevention, taking your risk level into account.

This service is not intended for diagnosing cancer or for the initial assessment of new symptoms. If you have a new, persistent, or worsening symptom, such as a lump in the breast, blood in the stool, a new or changing mole, unexplained weight loss, persistent pain, or any other change that raises suspicion of cancer, it is always recommended to book an appointment with a doctor. A genetic risk test does not replace a clinical assessment or necessary examinations when symptoms are present.

When should you consider genetic cancer risk assessment?

    If your close relatives have had cancer, especially at a young age or in several family members, it is important to assess the hereditary risk.

  • Desire for personalized recommendations for cancer prevention

    General recommendations may not take into account your individual risks.

  • Desire to know your genetic cancer risks

    Genetic tests can provide information about predisposition to certain types of cancer.

How to prepare for your appointment

  • Bring your ID card or another form of identification.
  • Write down the cancer cases in your family (what type of cancer, who had it, at what age).
  • Think about your lifestyle habits (diet, physical activity, smoking, alcohol consumption).
  • Write down all the questions and concerns you have about cancer prevention.
  • No special preparation (e.g., fasting) is necessary.
  • To perform the test, a sample is taken from the inside of your cheek with a cotton swab, which is a painless and simple procedure.

What to expect during your appointment

Sample collection

At a nurse’s appointment, a DNA sample is taken from the inside of your cheek with a cotton swab.

Laboratory analysis

The polygenic risk score corresponding to the selected test is analysed.

Results

The results usually arrive within 6 weeks and are available in the national health portal.

Report and recommendations

You will receive an individual medical report with your risk level and prevention recommendations.

Next steps

In case of a higher risk, it is recommended to discuss the results with a doctor to plan further monitoring or, if necessary, additional assessment.

Personalized cancer prevention is a service offered in collaboration between Meliva and Antegenes that assesses the genetic predisposition to breast, prostate, and colorectal cancer, and melanoma. It is suitable for all adults who want to consciously assess their cancer risks and take preventive steps.

What exactly do the personalized cancer prevention tests include?

We offer packages for women (genetic risk tests for breast cancer, colorectal cancer, and skin melanoma, recommended for ages 35-75) and for men (genetic risk tests for prostate cancer, colorectal cancer, and skin melanoma, recommended for ages 40-70). It is also possible to choose individual tests: the AnteBC breast cancer test (for women 30–75, analyses 2,803 genetic variants), the AnteCRC colorectal cancer test (for women and men 40–75, analyses 91 genetic variants), the AntePC prostate cancer test (for men 40–70, analyses 121 genetic variants), and the AnteMEL skin melanoma test (for women and men 18–70, analyses 28 genetic variants).

What will I learn from the test result?

You will receive an individual medical report that shows your genetic risk level for the respective cancer, recommendations on the age to start and the frequency of screenings, additional preventive measures, and information on what changes and signs you should pay attention to.

Does a polygenic risk score mean I will definitely get cancer?

No, a polygenic risk score cannot be used to diagnose cancer. An elevated risk does not mean you will definitely develop that specific cancer in your lifetime. Likewise, an average or lower risk does not mean that developing that specific cancer is ruled out. The test results must be considered in the context of other clinical data and risk factors.

How is the test done and how quickly do the results arrive?

The test is done by taking a sample from the inside of the cheek with a cotton swab, which is a painless and simple procedure. The results will arrive within 6 weeks and will be available in your national health portal account.

The polygenic risk score test does not analyse rare pathogenic mutations in single genes that increase cancer risk. It focuses on the combined effect of multiple genes.
