Braces
Braces are one of the most commonly used orthodontic appliances. As braces can control the movement of teeth in all three dimensions, they provide the best treatment results. Braces can be used to adjust the position of individual teeth, realign crowded teeth, close gaps between teeth, improve occlusion and, if necessary, prepare teeth for restorative work. Individual brackets are attached to each tooth and the entire row is connected with a special arch wire.
The appropriate solution will be determined during the consultation
Patients come to our orthodontists with a wide range of problems, from a desire to have a beautiful straight smile to more serious issues such as jaw pain or discomfort when eating due to malocclusion. At the initial consultation, the orthodontist listens to the patient’s concerns, evaluates the general condition of the teeth and the need for treatment, and performs additional examinations if needed.
After that, the dentist talks to the patient about their specific treatment needs, different treatment options, risks, costs, and estimated duration. The patient’s preferences – for example, that the treatment should be as unnoticeable as possible – will be taken into consideration when drawing up the treatment plan. Based on the diagnostic information, the dentist will decide on the most suitable treatment options (braces or other orthodontic appliances) for the specific patient. The patient will need to visit the orthodontist every 4 to 8 weeks, depending on the treatment plan and the selected appliances.
Treatment of both rows of teeth with braces lasts 1.5 to 2 years on average. There is no age limit to getting braces. The treatment is suitable for both children and adults. In Meliva, orthodontists use classic metal and ceramic braces, self-ligating metal and ceramic braces, and lingual braces.
The outcome of orthodontic treatment
At the end of the treatment, the orthodontic appliances are removed and replaced with retainers to maintain optimal results.
The importance of good oral hygiene
It is important to maintain good oral hygiene when wearing braces; however, it may take a little practice at first. Orthodontists have a number of suggestions for this. There are also oral hygienists at Meliva who can teach you how to care for your oral health while wearing braces. The most important thing to remember is to brush your teeth twice a day with a soft toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Electric, manual and orthodontic toothbrushes are suitable for brushing teeth. Tiny interdental brushes, available from Meliva clinics and pharmacies, are a good tool for cleaning around braces and removing food debris. Daily use of dental floss or an oral irrigator is also recommended to keep gums healthy.
The first sign of poor oral hygiene is usually gingivitis, characterised by red gums that bleed when brushing. If these signs are ignored, the inflammation can progress to inflammation of the supporting tissues of the teeth, or periodontitis. Poor oral hygiene can also lead to irreversible damage to the enamel of the teeth, known as decalcification (milky white patches on the teeth that may turn yellowish-brown over time). Therefore, it is recommended to visit an oral hygienist 1-2 times a year for a dental check-up.
