Couples or family counselling primarily focuses on the relationships and quality of relationships within a family system, various development crises in the family, and coping with them. 

The objective of therapy is to improve the family members' coping mechanisms and problem-solving skills and improve their awareness and mutual understanding.

Meliva's mental health specialistis are offering advice and support to all who seek help with mental health care, psychological treatment and prevention of mental health problems.

Meliva's mental health professionals have a wide range of expertise. We employ occupational and organisational psychologists, clinical psychologists, counselling psychologists, psychologists specialised in couples and family therapy and psychotherapy, mental health nurses, psychiatrists, supervisors, coaches, crisis counsellors, and a creative arts therapist.

The comprehensive range of services offered by each of these professionals enables the mental health professional to refer the client to a colleague if necessary.

Supporting mental health in the workplace

Many of our services are aimed at the business client, i.e. the employer, for whom we offer a logical package. Since the mental health of employees is crucial for creating value, it is more sustainable and economical to systematically maintain the employees’ mental health. The services include counselling, training, and work environment mapping.

The most important thing for the employer and the employee is the availability of an occupational and organisational psychologist. Our people in this field are highly trained professionals who focus their daily work on issues related to the work environment.

Occupational and organisational psychology is an applied science that studies the interactions between the employee and the workplace at individual, group and organisational levels, with the aim of increasing productivity and supporting the (mental) health and working life quality of employees.

In the current working environment, mental activities play a major part and the changing environment requires employees to adapt to new situations and conditions. This creates tension.

Naturally, various factors affect the mental health of employees and the working conditions and psychosocial working environment have a significant impact on their health, as they spend a large proportion of their days at work.

Appointments with an occupational and organisational psychologist are an excellent opportunity for employees and often also act as a preventive measure, as the problem can often be resolved or alleviated without the need for more serious intervention, such as a clinical psychologist or even a psychiatrist.

Mental health nurse

A mental health nurse is a nurse specialist who specialises in mental health nursing. They have in-depth knowledge and skills in maintaining mental health and psychological well-being, primarily in the evaluation of the state of mental health and counselling of people with mental disorders and their loved ones.   

A mental health nurse evaluates and analyses health risks, consults the patient and their loved ones, teaches self-help techniques, refers the patient to another specialist, if needed (e.g., psychologist, psychiatrist, clinical psychologist, psychologist-counsellor, occupational and organisational psychologist, etc.), and introduces various therapies to find the right option for assistance. 

Mental health nurses also provide remote appointments in the Meliva Digital Clinic. You can find the first available appointment in the online booking environment.

Coaching

A coach is your personal and professional partner whose role is to support your personal and professional development.   

Coaching is a future-oriented inspiring and creative partnership that supports customers in making changes, shaping new skills and habits, and overcoming development challenges.

Coaching helps increase confidence and put together specific action plans to implement the targets set.  

Contact a coach if you need to make major changes, make important decisions, successfully start in a new role, or get a neutral perspective. 

The duration of the appointments is 60–90 minutes

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy is intended to support the treatment of mental disorders and general coping and is conducted by a specially trained specialist/psychotherapist. The goal, number of appointments, and frequency of psychotherapy depend on the patient’s needs and will be agreed on with the psychotherapist during appointments.

Our psychotherapists are trained in various theoretical frameworks of psychotherapy, such as psychoanalysis and CBT.

Supervision

A supervisor is a partner for professionals working with people who helps to improve productivity and analyse activities in difficult situations. 

Supervision focuses on improving the communication and cooperation between people, psychological well-being, learning, and development (including professional development, shaping the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for work, and increasing competencies).  

Contact a supervisor if you need clarity regarding your tasks and roles and seek support in processing them. Supervision helps to cope with changes and challenges, find alternative solutions in difficult situations, and prevent multitasking and burnout.  

Crisis counselling

Crisis counselling is intended for people who have undergone a traumatic life event which interferes with their daily coping. Traumatic events are primarily events which make coping with life more difficult due to their unexpected and uncertain nature (being in an accident, losing a loved one, falling victim to a crime, physical illness, natural disaster, etc.) Crisis counselling helps to work through strong reactions to the crisis and find resources necessary to overcome it. 

Vaccination against COVID-19

Meliva Qvalitas AS carries out vaccination against COVID-19. We follow the guidelines of the Health Board and vaccinate people in the risk group, i.e. people over the age of 60 and those who are at risk due to an underlying medical condition. This applies if more than six months have passed since their last vaccination or recovery from COVID-19.

Medical certificates

We issue all medical certificates which are in accordance with the legislation of Estonia, such as medical certificates for receiving a driver’s license, commencing education or work, or continuing work. Please contact our reception for booking an appointment or if you have any questions.

If your employer has sent you to get a medical certificate, you can book a time in self service portal.

Some medical certificates are paid for by the employer, whereas others have to be paid for by the applicant. Please be sure to find out how payment for a particular certificate is arranged in your workplace before coming to us.

Medical certificate for motor vehicle drivers

In order to apply for a medical certificate for receiving a driver's license, the physician issuing the certificate must have access to the client's medical history and the electronic health declaration previously filled out by the client. The health declaration must be filled out no less than 30 days before the appointment.

The doctor reserves the right to request additional testing and not to issue the certificate if the client’s state of health does not meet the requirements.  In most cases, the additional testing can be concluded on site. The price for the testing shall be added to the cost of the medical certificate. We recommend that patients who have a chronic illness that requires constant monitoring, as well as patients with addiction problems refer to their treating physician (e.g. family doctor) to request a health certificate.

The service shall be paid for even if the doctor decides not to issue the certificate.

Vaccination

The vaccination against the flu for fall 2024 has started. Free vaccines for high-risk groups have arrived, we also offer flu vaccine for 22 €.

The Meliva medical centre administers vaccines that are part of the immunisation schedule and other vaccines recorded with the Estonian Agency of Medicines to adults and children.

We ask you to bring your vaccination card when coming in for vaccination. If you do not have the card, we can issue one. Keep the vaccination card, as you may need it when travelling to another country or going abroad for work or studies.

Vaccination against influenza

Infuenza or flu is a serious respiratory infection. You can get vaccinated against influenza throughout the season, but the most reliable protection is provided by vaccination before the season reaches its peak. 

The influenza vaccine will take effect 10-14 days after the injection and the strongest protection generally lasts for one flu season. Immunity develops within two weeks after vaccination.

Different types of influenza viruses circulate each year, which is why it is necessary to revaccinate against influenza every year.

The flu season typically peaks between October and January. Injectable vaccines contain split inactivated flu virus that teaches the body to recognise and respond to the pathogen.

Otorhinolaryngologist

Otorhinolaryngologists specialise in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions of the ear, nose and throat in adults and children.

We recommend seeing an otorhinolaryngologist if you suspect an acute or chronic ear, nose or throat disease, if you have frequent nosebleeds or problems with breathing through the nose, if you need an expert opinion on the removal of tonsils or adenoids, or if you are having trouble breathing while sleeping.

The main reasons for consulting an otorhinolaryngologist include:

Emotional Well-Being Questionnaire EEK-2

As part of occupational health check-ups, there is an opportunity to complete the Emotional Well-Being Questionnaire EEK-2 in advance. 

To fill out the questionnaire, please log in to the Meliva self-service environment.

The Emotional Well-Being Questionnaire (EEK-2) is a proven tool that helps assess a person's mental health, indicating the potential risks of mood disorders, anxiety disorders, panic disorders, social phobia, and mental exhaustion. If there are significant deviations in the questionnaire results, the occupational health doctor recommends consulting a psychologist.

During each occupational health visit, the results of the questionnaire are discussed with the employees—whether it is recommended to seek further help from a mental health specialist or if no issues are detected. In any case, the individual will receive feedback during the consultation about their mental health status based on the EEK-2 assessment.

Massage

A relaxing massage helps to reduce fatigue and relieve tension. Massage provides relief to tired and sore muscles after strenuous activity and is also a good way to reduce mental tensions and stress, calming the nervous system.

Massage manipulates soft tissues (muscles, tendons, ligaments), improving muscle metabolism and circulation. The selection of massage methods depends on the customer’s issue, aiming to reduce muscle tensions, increase muscle tone, improve metabolism and blood and lymphatic circulation, relieve pain, etc. The massage procedure lasts either 30 or 60 minutes.

Please note that the massage duration displayed in the self-service environment also includes preparations for the procedure. For example, when booking a 30-minute massage, the time displayed is 40 minutes.

The Meliva Tartu clinic has entered into a contract with the Estonian Health Insurance Fund for financing medical treatment in the following specialties:

Psychiatry (without a referral, in Põlva)

We provide services on the basis of a waiting list within the limit specified in the contract with the Estonian Health Insurance Fund. We offer paid appointments for services provided outside the general waiting list and for patients who do not have health insurance or the required referral. When coming to an appointment paid for by the Estonian Health Insurance Fund, patients must pay a visit fee of 5 euros.

§ 70.  Visit fee and additional cost-sharing upon payment for out-patient specialised medical care

(6) If the patient terminates a contract for provision of health services less than 24 hours before the time agreed for the provision of the health service or fails to appear at the place of performance of the contract by the time agreed for the provision of the service, the provider of the health service will have the right to charge the double visit fee from the patient upon performance of the next contract for the health service.

Meliva Tallinn clinic serve war refugees at Jalgpalli 1, Valukoja 7. 

All Ukranian refugees who have arrived in Estonia after February 24, 2022 and need help with a chronic or acute health issue are welcome to receive primary medical care.

We also perform general medical examinations, issue health certificates for work or school, extend prescriptions, and administer vaccinations for Ukranian refugees.

Health certificate for work is paid for UKR refugees according to the price list, other mentioned services are free of charge (including no visit fee). 

Patients can book an appointment by phone at 6051540 and by using the online booking system. You can call from Monday to Friday from 8:00 to 18:00. If you cannot come to your booked appointment, please cancel it by calling 6051540. We thank you for doing this, as it allows us to promptly offer the appointment to the next person who seeks assistance.

Coming to an occupational health assessment

Occupational health assessment is arranged by your employer. Once you have received an email for a health check-up, please schedule an appointment for the health check-up via self-service: https://bronn.meliva.ee/. The invitation is valid for 3 months.

Before the health check-up, please fill out the health declaration and mental health questionnaire in the self-service portal.

Please do not attend the health check-up during an acute illness phase, exacerbation of a chronic illness, or while on sick leave. 

If it is not possible to attend the health check-up on the designated date or time, please reschedule the appointment via self-service. The appointment can be changed up to 48 hours before the visit; if necessary, please inform the reception. 

Before reviewing the preparation guide for analyses and examinations, please clarify with your employer which examinations are included in your package.

Analyses provide an overview of the current state of the body, creating opportunities for disease prevention and early detection.

It is recommended not to eat, smoke, or chew gum for at least 2 hours before taking a blood test. This ensures that the test results are most objective. We suggest drinking plain, unflavored water during this time.

When giving a urine sample, remember that at least 2 hours should have passed since the last urination.

Eyesight checks and vision tests will be conducted by an optometrist or ophthalmologist.

If you wear glasses, we ask you to bring your glasses and, if possible, the prescription for your current glasses to the appointment.

We ask you to remove your contact lenses a few hours prior.

Exercise test on cycle ergometer (if you employer has chosen this)

A cardiovascular test which enables assessment of exercise tolerance and helps reveal health problems which might go unnoticed during a regular ECG conducted in a resting state. 

Before the exercise test, we ask you to sign a consent form on the conducting of the exercise test (the form is available in the physician's office or at reception).

We ask you to bring athletic and comfortable clothing and shoes to the exercise test. There is a showering option after the exercise test (bring a towel and shower products).

We recommend bringing an apple, yoghurt, or something sweet to get your energy up before the exercise test.

We recommend not working out 1 day before the test and avoiding major exercise.

The exercise test will be performed at the Meliva with persons weighing up to 140 kg.

We ask that people coming to the exercise test who have suffered severe COVID-19 symptoms come to the test once their performance has fully recovered (at least 3 weeks have passed since being declared healthy).

If it becomes evident at the appointment that an employee has not yet recovered, meaning that it is not possible to conduct the exercise test, the employer will unfortunately have to pay for a new appointment and exercise test.

A physiotherapist helps with musculoskeletal pain and restrictions caused by overload or traumas, in preparation for and recovery from surgery, and treatment and prevention of sports injuries.   

We ask you to wear comfortable clothing at the appointment to be able to follow the exercises.

In addition to regular physiotherapist appointments, we also offer the service online via video.

Abdominal ultrasound (if you employer has chosen this)

This examination enables to observe and measure the shape, size, and structure of internal organs. 

Do not eat at least 4-6 hours before the examination (except people suffering from diabetes).

We ask you to drink a sufficient amount (1-1.5 l) of still water 2-3 hours before the examination and not urinate before the examination is completed.

This test is intended for determining hearing acuity and diagnosing hearing loss.

We recommend avoiding noise at least 12 hours before the test.

This is a test that measures lung capacity and respiratory tract permeability at forced (maximal depth and speed) breathing.

Two hours before the test, avoid coffee, tea, and caffeinated soft drinks.

Four hours before the test, avoid smoking.

Six hours before the test, avoid taking short-acting bronchodilators.

Twelve hours before the test, avoid taking long-acting bronchodilators.

The test measures the maximum speed of expiration, which gives a primary estimation of lung function. The test will enable to decide whether consultation with a physician and spirometry are required.

Mammologist-oncologist

Patients who want to check their breasts or have questions or complaints related to their breasts are welcome to make an appointment with a mammologist-oncologist. The specialist provides counselling and, if necessary, refers the patient for further tests. Patients can also get help and instructions for independent breast examination. 

According to Dr Lea Vahter, a mammologist-oncologist working at Meliva, breast cancer ranks first among women's cancers in Estonia with approximately 800 cases per year, and unfortunately, women are diagnosed with breast cancer at an increasingly younger age each year. Therefore, she recommends that women in their 30s see a doctor for a breast examination at least once a year, since mammography is not performed at such a young age.

Psychologist

A psychologist is a mental health specialist with a university degree who is focused on evaluating the state of mental health and counselling, preventing the emergence and worsening of mental health problems, and supporting psychological well-being. A psychologist can have additional competencies in psychotherapy and use various methods accordingly. 

Eyes

The most common issues for people who work with a monitor and use smart devices are eye fatigue and the resulting vision problems and dry eye syndrome. The general room lighting, lighting of the work desk, and the monitor’s position in relation to the eyes play a major part in eye fatigue.

Problems with dry eyes can also be caused by strong forced ventilation or AC units in the office and blinking too little when working with a monitor. It is therefore important to look after eye health and come to vision checks regularly.

Implants

Implantology is a branch of prosthetics where an artificial root made of titan is placed in the jaw which will virtually replace the person’s root. Implants are the best way to replace a missing tooth or teeth, as they feel completely natural and restore the tooth’s shape together with a crown. Unimed uses original implants by Straumann, Neodent, and Ankylos.

Implantation begins with a thorough analysis based on the physician’s questions and the following examinations: OPTG panoramic X-ray, models, and 3D X-ray. The dental implant is fixed in the mouth in one visit under local anaesthesia. The crown will be bonded to the implant after osseointegration is complete, which generally takes 3–4 months. For long-lasting results, the patient is required to maintain excellent oral hygiene and come to check-ups every 6–12 months.

Implantation is a solution for one or several missing teeth

Individual and multiple teeth can be replaced with implants. In the case of one missing tooth, a crown with the shape and function of the patient’s tooth is bonded to the implant after osseointegration. If three or more teeth are missing, the patient may prefer a dental bridge. In this case, crowns are connected and supported by a stable base made of two or more implants, depending on the size of the gap.

Missing teeth, especially front teeth, are an aesthetic problem that has an impact on a person’s appearance. But another aspect that gets often overlooked is that several unfavourable changes can occur in the area of the missing tooth, making it essential to fill the gap with a prosthetic solution. If a missing tooth is not replaced over a long time, the adjacent teeth shift towards the gap, meaning that there may not be room to replace the tooth later on. If the tooth that is missing is a lower molar, for example, its opposite tooth or the upper molar does not have the necessary support and starts to drop down from its position.

Missing teeth also leads to bone loss which will affect the health of other teeth and gums. There are fewer masticatory surfaces on that side of the mouth, which may lead to the person preferring to chew food with the other side. In turn, this will cause issues with joints in the lower jaw.

Gastroenterologist

A gastroenterologist specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. You should see a gastroenterologist if you suffer from conditions that affect the oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, biliary tract, and pancreas or have any other gastrointestinal problems (indigestion, abdominal pain, heart burn, disturbing constipation or diarrhoea, irritable bowel syndrome, etc.). During the consultation, the doctor assesses the problem and arranges additional analyses or tests if necessary. You do not need a referral to book an appointment with a gastroenterologist.

Emergency dental care

Emergency dental care services are for those who have problems that need immediate attention, such as facial swelling, trauma to the oral cavity or toothache. Our dentists identify the cause of the problem and provide primary care to alleviate pain or treat inflammation.

Dental care often involves taking X-rays, which is why Meliva has all the necessary modern equipment conveniently available for you. Further treatment can be continued in Meliva. In this case, we will forward all the necessary information to your doctor ourselves.

Dental injuries occur in both children and adults. Treatment depends on whether the tooth was hit, dislodged, broken or completely lost during the accident.

The most common type of trauma in the permanent teeth is a crown fracture. This can vary from slightly chipped teeth to fractures of the entire crown. The prognosis depends on the extent of the fracture. The loss of a tiny piece of the tooth may not even bother the patient; however, a deeper fracture requires attention from a dentist.

The most serious dental trauma is dental avulsion or the complete displacement of a tooth from its socket. Saving an avulsed tooth requires quick and skillful action at the scene of the accident. The tooth should never be touched anywhere other than the crown (the portion of the tooth above the gum line) or excessively cleaned or wiped. It is best to keep it either in milk or in your mouth until you can see a doctor. The faster the tooth is re-implanted, the better the prognosis for its reintegration.

Emergency dental care reimbursed by the Health Insurance Fund

All adults are entitled to free emergency dental care, regardless of whether they have health insurance or not. Free emergency dental care is provided in situations where postponement of care or failure to provide care may cause the death or permanent damage to the health of the person requiring care. Emergency care is provided in case of an emergency that requires extraction of a tooth or opening of an abscess. The dentist decides whether the condition requires emergency dental care.

Pärnu clinic provides emergency dental care, which is available on a limited basis and with pre-booking. We provide emergency care in case of trauma or swelling, if failure to provide care could lead to the death of the patient. In other cases, please contact your doctor. Please contact our reception in advance so that we can clarify your condition. The patient's personal identification code and phone number are required for booking.
