Dental care for children

It is essential to see the big picture in dental care

In Meliva, dental care for children consists of a collaboration between various specialists such as dentists, orthodontists, prosthodontists, dental hygienists, diagnosticians, physiotherapists, speech therapists, and face and mouth surgeons. A holistic approach to problems enables to identify them at a young age. Starting treatment at the right time is easier for the child and minimises their fear of the dentist.

Cooperation and consistency

Cooperation between the child and their parent with the treatment team is essential for achieving good results. The dentist will draw up the treatment regimen and discuss treatment methods with the parent but it is up to the parent to ensure that the child follows the treatment regimen and maintains good oral hygiene.

You should bring your child to a dentist’s appointment if the last appointment was more than six months ago or if any issues have arisen. Regular check-ups ensure the best results, so we recommend booking the next appointment immediately after each visit.

Read how you as a parent can prevent your child from developing a fear of the dentist.

We partner with the Health Insurance Fund in dental care for children – dental care is free of charge for all patients up to the age of 19. A visit fee of 5 euros applies.

Come to a check-up before issues arise!

In children, tooth decay or cavities can develop quite rapidly and go unnoticed. For example, if tooth decay develops between two teeth, neither the child nor the parent may notice it before it has become a larger cavity and the tooth starts to cause pain. This is why it is important to come to check-ups before symptoms appear. Greater sensitivity to cold, warm, savoury, or sweet foods may indicate tooth decay.

Rules for healthy teeth:

  • teeth should be brushed twice a day for a minimum of 2 minutes
  • visit the dentist regularly 1–2 times a year
  • have the teeth checked even if they are healthy
  • if a child is thirsty, they should drink water, not juice, yoghurt, or other sweet beverages
  • there should be at least a 3-hour break between meals
  • healthy teeth start with a healthy diet
