Before coming for emergency care
If the toothache becomes unbearable, medications such as ibuprofen and paracetamol can help provide temporary relief. The pain will be reduced for a short period, but it will help you cope with the discomfort before you get to see the dentist.
If a tooth has been knocked out as a result of a fall or other trauma, you should keep it to take to the dentist. The lost tooth should never be touched anywhere other than the crown (the portion of the tooth above the gum line) or excessively cleaned or wiped. It is best to keep it either in milk or in your mouth until you can get to the dentist.
