Vaccination against tick-borne encephalitis

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) or inflammation of the brain is caused by a virus spread by tick saliva. TBE is dangerous and may lead to serious complications. You can get an infected tick from a park, as well as your home lawn.

We know that the “tick season” mainly lasts from April to October, however, the warm winters in the last few years have been very beneficial for ticks. According to the Health Board, ticks become active when the temperature on the ground is +5 – +7 degrees.

Timing the vaccination

You can vaccinate against TBE year round and the main vaccination consists of three doses. Generally, the time between the first and second dose is 1–3 months and the time between the second and third dose is 5–12 months. However, the physician may plan the second dose two weeks after the first vaccine to achieve faster protection.

Revaccination is required after the main vaccination; we recommend consulting with your physician with regard to revaccination.
