Orthodontics for adults

Orthodontic treatment is possible at any age

People often think that orthodontic treatment is only available for children and that the teeth of adults cannot be shifted. It is never too late to contact an orthodontist, as teeth can be shifted at any age. Orthodontic treatment can be used to change the position of individual teeth, align crowded teeth, close gaps between teeth, adjust the bite, and make preparations for future prosthetics, if necessary.

Incorrect bite causes issues

Crooked teeth are not just a matter of aesthetics – bite issues can result in a host of problems. For example, issues with the bite may cause incorrect teeth alignment, faster wear, pain in the lower jaw, and problems with mastication. It is also more difficult to take care of crooked teeth, as it is hard to reach all areas with the toothbrush. These unclean areas will be affected by tartar and tooth decay.

Help from braces

Braces are the most common aid used to correct the bite and they should not be feared. Nowadays, people often prefer ceramic braces, as they match the colour of teeth and are therefore less noticeable. There are also lingual braces that are attached to the inner surface of teeth and are not visible on the outside. Transparent aligners worn on top of teeth are also unnoticeable. In Meliva, we offer Invisalign and Airnivol aligners.

Stages of orthodontic treatment

At the initial consultation, the orthodontist listens to the patient’s concerns, evaluates the general condition of the teeth and the need for treatment, and performs additional examinations if needed.

After that, the physician talks to the patient about their specific treatment needs, different treatment options, risks, costs, and estimated duration. The patient’s preferences – for example, that the treatment should be as unnoticeable as possible – can be taken into consideration in drawing up the treatment plan. The physician will find a solution that ensures the best treatment outcomes and desired aesthetic results. Based on the diagnostic information, the physician will decide on the most suitable treatment options (braces or other orthodontic appliances) for the specific patient. The duration of orthodontic treatment depends on the treatment plan and can range from months to years.

The outcome of orthodontic treatment

At the end of the treatment, the orthodontic appliances are removed and replaced with retainers to maintain optimal results. The retainers are often permanent.
