Orthodontics for children

The earlier a child’s bite problems are detected, the easier it is to correct them. A common misconception is that orthodontic treatment is only possible for children after they have lost all their baby teeth. It is worth noting, however, that several bite problems can be treated and prevented beforehand.

Early identification is crucial

Bite problems are not always noticeable to the untrained eye and a visibly straight line of teeth does not necessarily mean that everything is well with a child’s bite. For example, a large gap between upper and lower teeth, lower teeth being positioned in front of upper teeth, and improper alignment of teeth indicate bite problems. Early detection of all these issues is crucial, as the treatment methods become more time-consuming and complex the later the problems are addressed. It is easier to start orthodontic treatment when the child’s jawbones are still forming. This generally means below the age of 15 depending on the child’s individual development. The best time for treating various jawbone anomalies is the growth period during puberty.

Treatment of bite problems begins with a consultation

An X-ray of the teeth is done in the first appointment which will be used by the physician to evaluate the emergence of permanent teeth. The child’s bite is analysed and possible treatment methods and proper schedule are determined if problems are identified.

Timely treatment helps to prevent bite problems. Sometimes it is necessary to replace a missing tooth – a prematurely removed or lost baby tooth is replaced by a placeholder to prevent the adjacent teeth from shifting in the wrong direction.

Many children have developed bite problems due to another general health condition and may need the assistance of another therapist, such as an otorhinolaryngologist or a myofunctional therapist, before orthodontic treatment. In this case, the specialist physicians work together to provide a holistic solution to the problem.
