Hand surgeon

Hand surgeons specialise in treating congenital, traumatic, degenerative, infectious, and tumorous diseases in the hands and wrists. Hand surgery aims to restore the function of the hand, which serves as both a sensory and motor organ for grasping and tactile perception.

You can refer to a hand surgeon for the following reasons, for example:

  • vague pain in the hand and forearm region
  • assessment and treatment of injuries and conditions following injuries of the hand and upper limb in adults and children
  • diagnostics and treatment of pain, stiffness, or instability in fingers, wrists, or elbows
  • diagnostics and treatment of osteoarthritis in the upper limbs
  • treatment of conditions and injuries of tendons and synovia
  • surgical treatment of Dupuytren's contracture
  • in the case of carpal tunnel syndrome and other nerve compression syndromes
  • microsurgical treatment of injuries in the upper limbs and hands
  • surgical treatment of benign cysts and tumours (ganglion, lipoma, hemangioma)

A hand surgeon’s examination begins by understanding the problem

  • What are the situations or movements that cause pain or other symptoms?
  • How does the hand work?
  • What can it not do?

The physician’s most important examination tools are their eyes and hands. If necessary, the physician will refer you to additional X-ray, MRI, ultrasound, or nerve examinations. It is important to note that although a proportion of the conditions treated by a hand surgeon require surgery, a significant amount of problems can be solved by, for example, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, various equipment (such as orthosis) and/or hormone injections.
