Here you can find information on how to take care of dental prostheses

To make crowns, dentures, orthodontic appliances and aligners last longer, we recommend following these tips.

Fixed dental prostheses:

Taking care of fixed dental prostheses (crowns, bridges) is similar to taking care of your natural teeth.

  • Brush your teeth daily for about 2-3 minutes in the morning and in the evening.
  • For bridgework, clean around and underneath your dental bridge with back and forth movements using a dental floss or a special interdental brush.
  • If ceramic crowns or veneers have been fitted to the front teeth, a mouth guard should be worn while sleeping. Place the mouth guard over the teeth to protect your dental prostheses from the forces of teeth grinding. The mouth guard is ordered for you by your doctor. Please note that the prostheses are not covered by a warranty if you do not use a mouth guard.
  • We recommend an annual check-up with your dentist.

Removable dental prostheses (dentures):

  • Remove the denture from the mouth for cleaning.
  • After each meal, rinse the mouth and clean the denture under warm running water with a soft toothbrush.
  • In the morning and in the evening, you can use dishwashing liquid for cleaning. Brush all surfaces of the denture and finally rinse thoroughly with water. It is advisable to wash the denture over a basin half full of water or over a soft towel to prevent the denture from breaking if you drop it.
  • Do not use abrasive toothpaste, alcohol, bleach or boiling water to clean the denture as these may damage the denture.
  • The denture must not be washed in a dishwasher.
  • At least once a week, soak the denture in a cleaning tablet solution for 10-15 minutes to help remove micro-organisms that can cause diseases of the mucous membrane. Rinse and brush the denture under running water after soaking.
  • If plaque develops on the denture which cannot be removed by brushing, take the denture to a dentist for cleaning.
  • Once the denture has been removed from the mouth (for example, if you remove the denture before going to bed), keep it in a moist environment – either in water or in a sealable box inside a moist napkin.
  • We recommend that you visit your dentist once a year to show the denture to your dentist so that he or she can adjust it, correct any defects or clean it if necessary.

If the denture breaks or needs adjustment

If your denture cracks or breaks, do not try to repair it yourself or keep wearing it, but contact your dentist as soon as possible.

Clean the denture from food debris and denture adhesive before bringing it in for repair.

If the denture becomes loose, contact your dentist. Do not adjust the denture or bend the clasps yourself.

Fixed orthodontic appliances:

  • Wash the orthodontic appliance at least once a day with a soft brush. Clean your teeth as usual.
  • After each meal, rinse your mouth with water.
  • Avoid hard and sticky foods and snacks.
  • Avoid hot drinks.
  • If you have any complaints (the appliance rubs your gums, etc.), contact your dentist.

Removable orthodontic appliances, aligners, splints:

  • Wash your appliance or aligner at least once a day with warm (not hot) water using a brush and dishwashing liquid or non-abrasive toothpaste.
  • When eating or drinking (except for pure water), remove the appliance or aligner from the mouth.
  • Once you remove your appliance or aligner, place it in a sealed container.
  • Avoid chewing gum while wearing your appliance or aligner.
  • Contact your orthodontist or dentist as soon as possible if the appliance or aligner breaks.
