Retention appliances

At the completion of orthodontic treatment, orthodontic appliances are removed and retention appliances are placed in the mouth to stabilise the result.

Fixed retainers

After orthodontic treatment, a wire retainer is fixed behind the upper and/or lower teeth. This holds the teeth in their new position and prevents them from shifting back to their former position. If the retainer is lost or broken, it must be reattached immediately.

Removable vacuum-formed retainers

To maintain the result achieved with orthodontic treatment, a vacuum-formed retainer (Essix) may be needed. This is a removable and transparent retainer made of thin acrylic. The device is made individually for each patient in the laboratory. The length of time one must wear a vacuum-formed retainer varies. It is worth remembering that the Essix retainer may not be worn while eating.

Retention plate

Sometimes a retention plate is used after the removal of braces to maintain the results of orthodontic treatment. The retention plate is a sturdy removable device, which is made of acrylic (plastic) and attached to the teeth with metal wires.
